Reflecting on his earlier posting in Ghadiyana Kalan, he noted how local villagers collaborated to upgrade school facilities, a model he intends to continue even post-retirement.

The collaborative research is being supported through a grant exceeding ₹90 crore under the Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research (PAIR) programme of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The initiative seeks to strengthen early-warning systems for livestock health, reduce economic losses for farmers, and enhance overall animal welfare.

According to the university, the project focuses on improving disease surveillance and preventive healthcare strategies for livestock through cutting-edge scientific and technological interventions. By identifying health risks at an early stage, the research is expected to significantly improve productivity and sustainability in the livestock sector.

Dr Devendra Pathak, principal investigator of the project, stated that the research covers three key areas. The first involves the development of AI and machine learning-enabled systems to monitor livestock health, optimise production efficiency, and promote sustainable farming practices. These technologies will help assess critical livestock parameters and improve real-time health monitoring.

The project marks an important step in advancing livestock research and reinforces GADVASU’s role in national-level scientific collaborations aimed at addressing agricultural and animal health challenges.

PAU honours agronomist for significant contributions to weed science

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has bestowed a prestigious recognition on principal agronomist Simerjeet Kaur from the Department of Agronomy for her outstanding work in weed research, teaching, and extension services.

Kaur has been awarded the “Dr Hardyal Singh Gill Distinguished Professor Chair in Weed Science Award” for a tenure of four years. The honour commemorates Dr Hardyal Singh Gill, a former head of the Agronomy Department (1978–1983) and a nationally renowned weed scientist who played a pioneering role in strengthening weed research at PAU. The chair was established to celebrate excellence and encourage advanced studies in weed management.

During her decade-long service (2008–2018) under the All-India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on weed management, Kaur contributed significantly to national research initiatives. Under her involvement, PAU received the Best Centre Team Award in 2016. Her work spans weed management and conservation agriculture-based cropping systems, resulting in the development of 30 crop production and protection technologies.

A distinguished researcher and educator, Kaur has published 90 research papers, including 29 in NAAS-rated journals (above 6.0). Her academic output also includes five books/manuals, 11 book chapters, 16 edited books and bulletins, and 117 extension articles.

She has supervised six MSc and four PhD scholars as a major advisor and has taught 35 agronomy courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Kaur also holds notable editorial roles: she serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Agronomy, Associate Chief Editor of the Indian Journal of Weed Science, and Associate Editor for international journals such as Crop Science, Journal of Agricultural Science (Cambridge), and Frontiers in Agronomy.

Ludhiana: 

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is preparing for a significant boost to its academic, research, and infrastructure facilities in 2026. Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal announced that the university has planned wide-ranging upgrades covering academic buildings, student housing, sports facilities, internal roads, digital agriculture, and climate-resilient farming initiatives.

As part of the roadmap for the coming year, PAU will undertake a major library modernisation project with an estimated investment of around ₹12 crore. The upgraded library is expected to be completed by July 2026 and will strengthen academic and research support for both students and faculty members.

To accommodate the growing number of students, the university is also expanding its residential infrastructure. A new hostel is under construction near the Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI), while an additional floor at Hostel No. 15 will soon become operational. Together, these developments will add nearly 80 new rooms for students.

Sports facilities at PAU are also set for enhancement. The university plans to modernise its shooting range by increasing its capacity to approximately 100 points, addressing current limitations and providing students with advanced training facilities. Additionally, astroturf will be installed on the tennis courts to further promote sports activities on campus.

Major improvements to internal road infrastructure are underway as well. Around 16 kilometres of campus roads will be recarpeted and widened. Key stretches, including the road from Gate No. 2 to Parker House, Flower Chowk to the open-air theatre, and routes leading to the Golden Jubilee landmark, will be expanded to improve connectivity and traffic flow within the campus.

Alongside physical infrastructure, PAU is strengthening its clean and green initiatives by increasing plantation drives across the university. The institution is also enhancing value addition in agriculture. Products manufactured at the newly established agro-processing plant will soon be sold through a dedicated outlet near the post office, making PAU-branded agricultural and processed food products available to the public.

The university will promote trait-specific crop varieties such as chapati-focused wheat, canola oil varieties, and basmati rice, which will also be offered at the new sales point.

On the research front, PAU plans to intensify efforts in geospatial intelligence and digital agriculture. Soil mapping projects in selected districts will be conducted using soil spectroscopy to generate precise data on nutrients, acidity, and other key parameters.

The university is also moving towards commercial-scale production of tissue-culture-based potato seed. Upgrades to the tissue culture laboratory aim to enable the production of nearly 10 lakh plants or tubers using advanced tissue culture techniques.

In addition, PAU will focus strongly on developing climate-resilient crop varieties. Special emphasis will be placed on promoting bio-fertilisers to encourage organic farming, along with renewed efforts toward crop bio-fortification.

According to Dr Gosal, these initiatives reflect PAU’s commitment to advancing education, research, sustainability, and innovation, positioning the university for significant progress in the coming years.

PAU Leads Prime Minister’s Doctoral Fellowship Selections

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has emerged as the top-performing institution under the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research, securing 13 selections, university officials announced. The list of awardees was recently released in two phases.

The Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme is a prestigious public–private partnership (PPP) initiative jointly implemented by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The programme aims to promote industry-oriented doctoral research by encouraging young scholars to work on research problems of national importance and commercial relevance.

Under the scheme, selected PhD fellows receive a monthly fellowship of around ₹1 lakh, with 50 per cent funded by the Union government and the remaining 50 per cent contributed by an industry partner. Each fellow undertakes research in close collaboration with the partnering company, ensuring practical application of academic work.

Among the PAU awardees, Deepti Jaswal is pursuing her doctoral research with Shivambu International (BDM Foods), while Renuka Sahu is associated with Mahalaxmi Seeds. Johar Singh is working with Aujla Seeds, Machhiwara, and Akshi Attri has partnered with Higgs Healthcare. Other selected scholars include Uday Kumar BV with Star Agriseeds Private Limited, Komal with Savannah Seeds Private Limited, Arti Gupta with Neva Plantations LLP, and Gurpreet Kaur with Onkar Seeds Private Limited.

PAU Secures ISRO Grant for Groundwater Sustainability Research

Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has received a prestigious research grant from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to carry out an in-depth study on groundwater sustainability across India. The project has been approved under ISRO’s RESPOND (Sponsored Research and Development) programme and will run for a period of three years.

The research focuses on understanding groundwater behaviour under changing climatic conditions and aims to strengthen India’s groundwater security, which is increasingly under threat due to climate change and overexploitation.

The project will be led by Dr Samanpreet Kaur, Principal Scientist and Principal Investigator from PAU’s Department of Soil and Water Engineering. Under this initiative, researchers will monitor groundwater levels nationwide and analyse how climate variability affects groundwater resources. Special attention will be given to identifying regions that are most vulnerable to groundwater-related risks and determining critical periods when these areas face the highest threat.

A key component of the study involves analysing data from NASA’s GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) twin satellites to assess changes in groundwater storage. The research team will also compare satellite-based observations with conventional groundwater monitoring methods to evaluate their effectiveness.

According to the researchers, preliminary observations in Punjab indicate an average annual depletion of nearly 50 cm in groundwater levels. However, detailed scientific analysis is required to validate these trends and understand regional variations across different aquifer systems in the country.

The study aims to provide scientifically sound recommendations on sustainable groundwater extraction limits, helping policymakers and planners ensure long-term water security without compromising environmental balance.

The project was awarded through a competitive selection process involving research proposals from institutions across the country. Scientists from PAU successfully secured the grant for their research focused on understanding groundwater behaviour and climate-related risks.

Dr Samanpreet Kaur, principal scientist in the Department of Soil and Water Engineering at PAU and the project’s principal investigator, stated that the research team will monitor groundwater levels across different regions of India and assess the impact of climate change on groundwater resources. The study aims to identify areas vulnerable to groundwater-related risks and determine time periods when these regions are most susceptible.

As part of the research, the team will conduct an extensive analysis of data obtained from NASA’s GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) twin satellites to evaluate changes in groundwater storage. The study will also examine the behaviour of various aquifer systems across the country, including alluvial, hard-rock and coastal aquifers, each of which responds differently to environmental pressures.

The project will therefore involve in-depth data analysis and field studies to better understand long-term groundwater risks and their driving factors.

Based on scientific evidence, the team aims to provide recommendations on sustainable groundwater extraction, including guidance on whether groundwater can be safely withdrawn from specific regions and the quantity that can be extracted without compromising long-term sustainability.

Another important objective of the project is to evaluate whether satellite-based observations can complement or partially replace conventional groundwater monitoring methods, such as piezometers, thereby enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of groundwater assessment.

The research group also includes climate specialist Dr. Prabhjyot Kaur Sidhu and Dr. Surbhi Gupta, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.

In addition, the team will work collaboratively with Rajarshi Saha from ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), integrating advanced space-based tools with academic research to strengthen scientific understanding and policymaking related to groundwater management.

Ludhiana Veterinary University Earns National Recognition

Ludhiana: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) has strengthened its standing in the field of veterinary public health after its Centre for One Health achieved major recognition at the IAVPHS-2025 conference.

Faculty members and students from the university performed exceptionally well, winning three awards for best oral presentations and seven awards for best poster presentations across different subject categories during the international symposium and the XXI annual conference of the Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists.

A significant highlight was PhD scholar Dr. Iqra Arif, who received the Best Thesis Award, marking a notable academic achievement at the doctoral level. Additionally, postgraduate student Dr. Jayesh was appreciated for creating the winning logo design for the Centre for One Health.

Dr. J.S. Bedi, Director of the Centre for One Health, was honoured with the Dr. A.T. Sherikar Outstanding Public Health Veterinarian Award. Meanwhile, Dr. Simranpreet Kaur received the Dr. R.K. Aggarwal Food Safety Award for her contributions in the field.

The university also secured key leadership roles in the IAVPHS Executive Committee. Vice-Chancellor Dr. J.P.S. Gill was elected President, Dr. J.S. Bedi became Vice-President, and Drs. Simranpreet Kaur and Deepali Kalambhe were selected as committee members.

December 21, 2025: Students and researchers from the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, delivered an impressive performance at the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists Congress (IAVPCON-2025), held at Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Dr T. Mohanapriya was honoured with the Young Scientist Award for her outstanding work in molecular pathology. She also received the Second Best PhD Thesis Award for her doctoral research titled Immunophenotyping and miRNA Expression as Biomarkers in Canine Lymphoma, conducted under the guidance of Dr Vishal Mahajan.

Dr Rajat Sood, a PhD scholar, won the Best Poster Presentation Award for his MVSc research carried out under the supervision of Dr Omer K Baba. He further earned the Best Case Presentation Award during the ICVP technical session. Additionally, Dr Chagi Nagalinga, an MVSc scholar, secured the Second Best ICVP Case Presentation Award, while Dr Pranesh M, another MVSc student, received the Consolation Award in the same session.

The technical session was chaired by Dr Amarjit Singh, former Professor of the department and Vice-President of ICVP, who also presented the lead paper. Dr Kuldip Gupta, Head of the Department, commended the students for their enthusiastic participation and commendable achievements at the national-level congress.

Dr J.P.S. Gill appreciated the students’ accomplishments and acknowledged the faculty’s role in mentoring and training them. Dr S.S. Randhawa, Dean, College of Veterinary Science, and Dr S.K. Dr. Sandeep Singh, principal entomologist (fruits) in the Department of Fruit Science at PAU, received the “Excellence in Environmental Research” award from the Abraham Verghese Insect and Nature Trust, Bengaluru.

The award ceremony took place on December 14 in Bengaluru. The honor was presented by Dr. J.P. Singh, Plant Protection Advisor to the Government of India, along with noted entomologist Dr. C.A. Viraktamath. Dr. Singh was acknowledged for his significant work in developing eco-friendly insect pest management technologies and for his efforts in restoring and conserving historical trees at gurdwaras across the country.

The recognition highlights Dr. Singh’s innovative research in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for fruit crops. His work includes the development of specialized pest control solutions such as the PAU fruit fly trap, termite traps, chafer beetle traps, and management techniques for pests like litchi fruit borer, guava fruit borer, and fruit-sucking moth, among others.

In addition to agricultural pest management, Dr. Singh has also contributed to the conservation and rejuvenation of centuries-old heritage trees, helping promote environmental preservation and biodiversity.

In a bid to make agricultural education more engaging, a PhD scholar at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has developed innovative outreach tools, including a farmer-friendly version of the popular board game, Ludo. The idea is simple yet impactful teach farmers best practices through play.

To make agricultural education more engaging and easy to understand, a PhD scholar from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has transformed the popular board game Ludo into an innovative learning tool for farmers.

The initiative has been developed by Sunnyrudh Singh, a PAU alumnus who completed his MSc in Agriculture and is currently pursuing a PhD. His doctoral research focuses on evaluating how edutainment-based tools can improve farmers’ understanding of environmental and sustainable farming practices.

As part of his research, Singh designed a customised Ludo game that communicates essential farming do’s and don’ts in an interactive manner. The game can be adapted to spread awareness on key agricultural topics such as cotton cultivation, integrated pest management, water conservation, and direct sowing techniques.

In addition to the board game, Singh has also created musical jingles, educational songs, and an e-learning module to promote soil and water conservation. These learning resources are available in five languages Punjabi, Hindi, English, Spanish, and Italian making them accessible to a wider and even international audience.

His innovative work has received international recognition, leading to an invitation from California State University, Fresno, where he will engage with farmers and K-12 students studying agriculture. Singh believes that regions like Punjab and California face similar agricultural challenges, including groundwater depletion and excessive pesticide use, making these tools relevant in both contexts.

To assess the effectiveness of his approach, Singh plans to measure the impact of these edutainment tools among farmers in Punjab, other Indian states, and California, and further refine them based on feedback.

One of his Punjabi jingles delivers a strong conservation message, advising farmers not to waste water and warning of long-term consequences if scientific advice is ignored.

According to Anil Kumar Sharma, Associate Director at PAU’s Communication Centre and Singh’s research guide, the project impressed a visiting delegation from California State University. He noted that Singh’s creative approach adds a new dimension to PAU’s extension activities, helping scientific messages reach farmers in a simple and engaging way.

The cardboard version of the Ludo game has already received copyright protection from the Government of India, and a mobile app version is also available. Singh explains that learning through play helps farmers absorb information more effectively, as repetition during gameplay reinforces key messages better than traditional advisories.

As he prepares for his upcoming visit to California, Singh hopes his edutainment-based tools will help bridge global gaps in agricultural awareness and demonstrate that learning can be both effective and enjoyable.

PAU Food Scholars Win Top Honours at International Conference on Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences

Scholars from the Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) brought laurels to the university by securing top honours at the 12th International Conference on “Agriculture & Veterinary: Transformative Approach, Research & Innovations Forum.” The international event was jointly organised by Goa College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, and ICAR–National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, earlier this month.

Karnika, a PhD scholar at PAU, was awarded the Best Oral Presentation Award for her research paper titled “Integrating Nutrigenomics into Precision Nutrition: A Timely Approach to Mitigate Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors.” The study was co-authored by Dr Sonika Sharma, Dr Shikha Mahajan, Dr Shaveta Batta, and Dr Bishav Mohan. In recognition of her outstanding contribution, Karnika was also conferred the Young Fellow Award at the conference.

Her major advisor, Dr Sonika Sharma, explained that the nutrigenomics-based research—conducted collaboratively by PAU and Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMC&H), Ludhiana—revealed that individuals carrying high-risk FTO gene variants could substantially lower their susceptibility to obesity and cardiovascular diseases through personalised dietary and lifestyle modifications. The findings highlighted the growing importance of precision nutrition in addressing genetically linked health risks.

Another PAU PhD scholar, Shrishti Joshi, received the Best Oral Presentation Award for her paper titled “Microwave Roasting of Nigella sativa: Enhancing Nutritional and Functional Properties for Food and Nutraceutical Applications,” co-authored by the same research team. She was also honoured with the Young Researcher Award at the event.

Her advisor, Dr Shikha Mahajan, noted that the research on Nigella sativa demonstrated its strong potential as a functional food ingredient with significant natural health-promoting benefits, paving the way for its wider application in food and nutraceutical products.

Highly Qualified Teachers Continue on Temporary Contracts

Even after serving for over ten years, teachers working in Punjab’s meritorious schools are still waiting for the regularisation of their jobs. Many of these educators are PhD holders and NET-qualified professionals, yet they continue to work without salary hikes, allowances, or even basic workplace facilities.

We have been waiting for regularisation for more than a decade, said Lakhvir Singh, a teacher at Ludhiana’s Meritorious School. During protests, he carries a paper-made green pen, symbolising the government’s promise to regularise their services — a promise that remains unfulfilled.

Out of 189 government school students who cleared JEE Mains, 131 belonged to nine meritorious schools

In the previous year, 243 students cracked NEET, and over 2,000 students scored above 90% in Class 12 board examinations from these schools.

Promises of Regularisation Still Pending

Despite these achievements, teachers continue to work on temporary appointments. Teena, state president of the Meritorious Teachers’ Union, stated that educators were assured regularisation alongside non-teaching staff under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, but no progress has been made so far.

Policy Under Preparation, Say Officials

Some hope emerged after a meeting held on October 1 with the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister, where teachers were informed that the Director General of School Education (DGSE) is in the process of framing a regularisation policy.

Earlier, former DGSE Vinay Bublani had also indicated that the matter was under review and that a committee was being formed. Additionally, Amandeep Kaur, Project Director of the Meritorious Society, confirmed that the file related to the teachers’ regularisation is still under consideration.

The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Ludhiana Chapter, has encouraged young researchers and scientists to pursue advanced research aimed at transforming ornamental horticulture through modern biotechnology.

The message was delivered by Dr. Rajinder Singh Ranu, Professor Emeritus at Colorado State University, USA, during a special lecture titled “Flower Power and Biotechnology.” The academic session highlighted the growing role of molecular biology and genetic engineering in improving flower crops.

The lecture was chaired by Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Convener of NAAS–Ludhiana Chapter and Director of Research at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). The event was organized at Darshan Singh Brar Symposium Hall, located at the Gurdev Singh Khush Institute of Genetics, Plant Breeding and Biotechnology (GSKI-GPBB), PAU.

During his address, Dr. Ranu discussed advanced genetic engineering techniques to enhance stress tolerance in flowering plants, with a particular emphasis on geraniums. He explained how regulating ethylene stress during plant propagation can significantly reduce post-harvest losses and improve overall plant quality.

Dr. Ranu also shared insights from his research on callus culture techniques and the development of in-vitro regeneration protocols, which enable faster and more efficient propagation of elite plant varieties. Ruchika Zalpouri, a former student of the Department of Processing and Food Engineering at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has been recognised with the Best Thesis Award – PhD at the 8th Plantica Academic and Research Awards 2025. The awards were organised by the Association of Plant Science Researchers (APSR), an ISO 9001:2015 certified body registered under The Indian Trust Act, 1882, ensure compliance with MSME, Government of India. The award ceremony took place online on August 31.

She earned the honour for her doctoral research titled “Development and Evaluation of Solar Assisted Refractance Window Dryer for Vegetable Purees.” The study was carried out under the mentorship of Dr Manpreet Singh, scientist in the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering at PAU. Her work focused on developing an advanced drying technology capable of processing heat-sensitive food products while maintaining their nutritional value and sensory qualities.

The selection process for the award included two phases — an initial screening followed by a detailed thesis presentation. In recognition of her accomplishment, Zalpouri received a certificate, a medal, and life membership in APSR.

The future of India’s textile industry lies in the development of technical textiles, said Ajay Gupta, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, while addressing a conference in Ludhiana. Gupta attended the event as the chief guest and emphasised the need for innovation-driven growth in the sector.

The conference was organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) with the support of the Ministry of Textiles under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM). It focused on innovation, sustainability, and skill development in the technical textiles domain and drew participation from industry experts, government officials, and entrepreneurs.

Highlighting Ludhiana’s strong industrial base, Gupta noted that the city has the potential to emerge as a major hub in the technical textiles ecosystem. He stated that India’s export share in technical textiles currently stands at around 16 per cent and that focused policy interventions are underway to enhance this figure. Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) scientist Dr Nikita Sandhu has created history by becoming the first faculty member from the university to receive the prestigious INSA Young Associateship from the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).

The INSA Young Associateship is a highly competitive national honour awarded to outstanding scientists below the age of 40 in recognition of their exceptional research contributions and leadership potential in advancing science in India.

Dr Sandhu was selected for this honour for her pioneering research in agricultural biotechnology. With this achievement, she has now earned young scientist honours or fellowships from all three of India’s premier scientific academies—the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). This milestone makes her the first young scientist across all faculties at PAU to receive this rare and distinguished combination of recognitions.

Recently, she was also chosen as a NAAS Associate for 2025 and an INSA Young Associate Fellow for 2025, further strengthening her national academic standing.

Dr Sandhu completed her PhD in 2014 from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines, and CIRAD, France. Her doctoral research was supported by the Monsanto Beachell Borlaug International Scholarship Programme.

Following her PhD, she undertook four years of postdoctoral research at IRRI, Philippines, before joining PAU in 2018 as a molecular geneticist at the School of Agricultural Biotechnology.

Over the course of her academic career, Dr Sandhu has received numerous prestigious awards, including the NASI Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award, SERB Women Excellence Award, DBT BioCARe Women Scientist Award, CSIR-UGC Junior Research Fellowship, IRRI Seed Grant Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the UNLEASH Lab International Innovation Award.

Her research excellence has also been recognised through the successful acquisition of five national research grants funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), along with one international research project supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), United Kingdom.

Women Researchers from Veterinary University Honoured with Best Thesis Awards

Ten PhD scholars and two MVSc (Master of Veterinary Science) researchers from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, have been recognised with prestigious awards for their outstanding thesis work. The honours were presented during the Best MVSc and PhD Thesis Award Ceremony 2025, organised by the Indian Veterinary Association – Women’s Wing (IVA-WW) in collaboration with Bihar Animal Sciences University, at the Bihar Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute in Patna.

The event created a historic national platform celebrating excellence in research across all 18 disciplines of veterinary and animal sciences in India.

The award ceremony received an overwhelming response from institutions nationwide, with 347 theses submitted, including 224 MVSc and 123 PhD research works. A panel of 40 distinguished experts conducted a detailed and transparent evaluation process. As a result, 67 PhD and 78 MVSc theses, completed between 2019 and 2024, were selected for recognition.

The ceremony witnessed participation from women veterinary professionals representing different states, highlighting the unity and diversity of the veterinary community.

Among the GADVASU PhD awardees were Dr Gurjot Kaur Mavi, Dr Monika Thakur, Dr Rashmi Thakur, Dr Sreekala S Mohandas, Dr Nimbalkar Vidya Gajanan, Dr Samikshya Sarangi, Dr Sundus Gazal, Dr Akshita Chadda, Dr Shikha Chaudhary, and Dr Tulimoni Seal. Ludhiana:

In a major boost to agricultural research and higher education, the Punjab government has announced a ₹40-crore capital grant for Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for the financial year 2025–26. The announcement was made by Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema during his visit to the university.

The funding follows an earlier grant of ₹20 crore in 2024–25, which was provided to strengthen PAU’s research capabilities and academic infrastructure. With the new allocation, the state government aims to further enhance research facilities and support innovation in agriculture.

During the visit, Cheema inaugurated a newly established Agro Processing Complex at PAU. The facility, equipped with machinery worth ₹46 lakh, is designed to promote value-added agriculture and encourage entrepreneurship among rural youth at the village and cluster levels.

The finance minister also laid the foundation stone for two upcoming projects — a Plant Acclimatisation Facility and a Gene Bank, with a combined cost of ₹2 crore. These facilities will supply high-quality planting material to farmers through commercial tissue culture, contributing to the growth and sustainability of Punjab’s farming sector.

Cheema reviewed multiple infrastructure development works currently underway at the university using the previously sanctioned ₹20-crore grant. These include the installation of a modern air-conditioning system at the Dr MS Randhawa Library, involving an investment of ₹4 crore, along with upgrades to reading halls and book display areas.

Other projects include the construction of an additional floor at the boys’ hostel at a cost of ₹2.56 crore, and the modernization of sports facilities, including new gym equipment and renovations worth ₹1.43 crore.

As part of the inspection, the finance minister also visited university hostels, the sports museum, swimming pool, guest houses, and residential complexes, and reviewed the overall progress of infrastructure development across the PAU campus.

PhD Scholar Honoured with Best Student Award

Priyanka, a PhD scholar in the Department of Microbiology at the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, has been awarded the “Best Student of the Department” for the academic year 2023–24. The recognition was conferred by the Microbiologists Society, India, under the leadership of its President, Dr. Arvind Deshmukh.

As part of her doctoral programme, Priyanka has been engaged in research focused on green technologies for waste valorisation, working under the mentorship of her major advisor, Dr. Pooja.

She received the award during the 28th Punjab Science Congress (PSC-2025), a National Conference on Current Trends in Science and Technology, held under the auspices of the Punjab Academy of Sciences, Patiala. The event was hosted by the Faculty of Sciences, Khalsa College, Amritsar, from February 7 to 9, 2025.

Hands-on Research Experience at Harike Wetland

Two PhD scholars from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, recently participated in the annual bird census conducted at the Harike Wetland and Wildlife Sanctuary. The exercise offered the research scholars valuable field exposure and practical experience in avian population studies.

Part of the Asian Waterbird Census

The activity was carried out under the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) programme, an international initiative aimed at monitoring the population and diversity of waterbirds across wetlands. The census helps assess the ecological health of wetland ecosystems and supports long-term conservation planning.

Participation of Research Scholars

The participating scholars, Tishali Mehta and Sukhdeep Kaur, are doctoral students from the Department of Ornithology at PAU. They conducted bird identification and population recording under the guidance of Dr Tejdeep Kaur Kler, Head of the Department.

Monitoring Migratory and Resident Birds

During the census, the students recorded both resident bird species and migratory birds that visit the wetland during the winter season. Such data plays a crucial role in understanding migration patterns and changes in bird populations over time.

Significance of Harike Wetland

Located at the confluence of the Beas and Sutlej rivers, the Harike Wetland is known for its rich biodiversity. Every year, it attracts ornithologists, researchers, students, and conservationists from across the region for bird monitoring and ecological studies.

Contribution to Global Conservation Efforts

The census forms part of the International Waterbird Census, a global programme that provides scientific data to guide wildlife conservation efforts worldwide and strengthen wetland management policies.

Nisha, a PhD research scholar from the Department of Extension Education at the College of Agriculture, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), earned the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Science, Mathematics, Technology and Education – Making and Shaping the Future (SMTE-2024).

The conference took place from November 27 to 29, 2024, at Punjabi University, Patiala, and was organized in partnership with the School of Education, Curtin University, Perth, Australia.

Her award-winning research paper, titled “Impact of Informative Videos on Wheat Cultivation Practices: Enhancing Cost Efficiency and Economic Returns for Farmers in Punjab,” focused on the effective use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools to strengthen knowledge transfer among farmers and improve agricultural outcomes.

Ludhiana Academics Divided Over New UGC PhD Eligibility Guidelines

Academicians in Ludhiana have expressed mixed opinions regarding the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) latest guidelines on PhD admissions. While many educators view the reform as a positive step for meritorious students, others believe the change may present practical challenges.

What the New Guideline Says

Under the new UGC regulation, students who complete a four-year undergraduate (UG) programme with 75% marks or above are now eligible to pursue a PhD directly, even without a master’s degree. They may apply with or without qualifying for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

Support for the Move

Punjab’s Deputy Director of Higher Education, Ashwani Bhalla, supported the decision, noting that achieving 75% in undergraduate studies is difficult and typically reflects strong academic ability. He stated that allowing such high-performing students to begin PhD studies earlier would help them complete their doctoral degree at least a year sooner.

Bhalla also pointed out that universities and colleges will need to introduce four-year undergraduate programmes. These are expected to be implemented from the upcoming academic session, aiming to reduce the time students spend in higher education.

A professor from Panjab University (PU) emphasized that the success of this reform depends heavily on proper implementation. According to the professor, the curriculum must include strong research foundations. If institutions ensure that students learn essential research skills during their undergraduate programme, they can be prepared for doctoral studies. However, without rigorous preparation, students may struggle to cope with the demands of PhD research.

PU Senate member Mukesh Arora added that the change aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and increases the value of undergraduate education. He explained that in the four-year UG programme, the final two semesters will focus on research work, helping students develop the skills required for direct entry into a PhD programme.

Concerns Raised by Some Academics

Not all educators are convinced the guideline will be beneficial. A college professor from Nawanshahr argued that undergraduate students may lack the maturity to select a research topic or pursue doctoral studies immediately after graduation. The professor noted that a master’s degree often helps students refine their interests and sometimes even change their academic specialization.

According to this perspective, the master’s programme serves as an important bridge that prepares students academically and intellectually for research. Skipping this stage, the professor warned, may make doctoral research more difficult and could affect the overall quality of research outcomes.

Overall Outlook

The new UGC PhD guideline has sparked a healthy debate among educators. While supporters see it as a time-saving and merit-based opportunity for talented students, critics stress the need for careful implementation and adequate research training at the undergraduate level to ensure students are truly ready for doctoral studies.

69 PAU Students Succeed in ICAR Entrance Exams

As many as 69 students from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have successfully cleared the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) All India Entrance Examination for Admission (AIEEA) for MSc and PhD programmes, marking a significant academic achievement for the university.

Strong Performance in Postgraduate Admissions

Out of the total successful candidates, 23 students qualified for the ICAR-AIEEA-PG 2023, securing admission to Master’s degree programmes in agricultural sciences. A large proportion of these MSc qualifiers were graduates from biotechnology and horticulture, reflecting the strength of these disciplines at PAU.

PhD Aspirants Excel Across Key Departments

In the PhD category, 46 students earned admission to doctoral programmes across various agricultural universities. The highest number of successful PhD candidates came from the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics and the Department of Entomology, underlining PAU’s strong research base in these fields.

Adding to the university’s pride, nine students secured ranks of 8 or above, with two students achieving the top rank (Rank 1) in their respective categories, showcasing exceptional academic excellence.

Jaspreet Kaur, PhD student of Department of Microbiology, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, has been awarded with ‘S. Jawahar Singh and Mrs. Satbachan Kaur Young Scientist Award’ for presenting original research work at the 22nd Punjab Science Congress, 2019, held in DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (Jalandhar) Punjab Academy of Sciences, Patiala

Jaspreet Kaur, a PhD candidate in the Department of Microbiology at the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, has been recognized for her outstanding research. She was presented with the ‘S. Jawahar Singh and Mrs. Satbachan Kaur Young Scientist Award’ during the 22nd Punjab Science Congress held in 2019 at the DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology in Jalandhar. The prestigious award was conferred by the Punjab Academy of Sciences, Patiala.

Along with the title, Kaur received a medal, a formal certificate, and a cash prize of ₹7,500. Her award-winning presentation focused on her doctoral thesis, titled .Development of bacterial consortium to improve green manure decomposition and nutrient availability in kharif maize.

Her research involved isolating specific bacterial cultures from natural, undisturbed environments and characterizing them based on their ability to speed up the decomposition of green manure. When applied in field trials, this bacterial consortium successfully shortened the decomposition period, enhanced soil nutrient levels, and led to an increase in maize crop yields. Jaspreet Kaur conducted this study under the supervision of her major advisor, Dr. S.K. Gosal, from the Department of Microbiology.
